Speaking to a capacity audience in Lake Avenue Congregation Church last night, Dr. Gordon H. Clark, head of the philosophy department at Butler University, began his series of Payton Lectures on "The Christian View of Men and Things" with a warning that "we cannot read history in terms of progress."
"Civilization inevitably degenerates" the lecturer, speaking at the invitation of Fuller Theological Seminary, told his hearers. He added the sober caution that "only a Christian view enables one to escape complete pessimism."
The address, titled "The Christian View of History," was the first in a series of five, and was attended by clergymen and students from many parts of the Los Angeles area, as well as by the seminary student body.
The remaining lectures will be given daily, but are scheduled in the church auditorium at 10 a.m., to coincide with the divinity school's chapel service. Open to the public, today's lecture will be on "The Christian View of Politics."
Dr. Clark, whose writings in philosophy and ethics have appeared in numerous scholastic journals, is the author of several technical works in those fields. He is considered one of the outstanding contemporary scholars in the area of Neo-Platonism.
Lecture topics for the remainder of the week, as announced by the Indiana philosopher, are as follows: Wednesday, "The Christian View of Ethics"; Thursday, "The Christian View of Religion"; Friday, "The Christian View of Epistemology."
